Northampton nightclub Lava and Ignite will be renovated in to the town’s first 24 hour gym this month, following the deaths of university students Nabila Nanfuka and Laurene-Danielle Jackson at an event held there in October 2011.
The planning application made by Pure Gym was approved by Northampton Borough on 2 May, as Luminar Leisure (the parent company of Lava and Ignite nightclub) announced it had gone in to administration within days of the fatal incident last year.
Nabila Nanfuka, 22, and Laurene-Danielle Jackson, 19, died after suffering injuries from being crushed to death at the university coach rave, Wickedest Skank. A stampede ensued inside the club once the DJ told partygoers that their coaches were leaving without them. More than a thousand students attended the event and the venue was reportedly over capacity.
The £1 million gym will formally open in late June or early July.
